a slack comment on why freelancers do not invest in owning their website portfolios
Source: Superpath Community

That’s a question I too had every time I saw posts on forums about choosing a portfolio platform. After all, the costs for using premium portfolio platforms more or less is similar to hosting a website with a custom domain.

Yet, these are the answers one typically receives on why freelancers do not go ahead with owning a website. I have also debunked every answer since they are misconceptions:

  • “I can’t build a website or I don’t know how to code” – most website builders have portfolio templates available to pick and choose from.
  • “I can’t design” – again, one can simply choose from templates.
  • “No time to maintain a website” – most do not even require much maintenance.
  • “It is an investment” – most website builders are cheap or have a generous free version that is enough for the portfolio use case. Also, you can always monetize your portfolio using blogs or consultation pages to get the ROI.
  • “No time to add blog posts” – this is optional, though generating traffic would mean you get more leads.

I was so triggered by these misconceptions about how many freelancers do not get the benefit of owning their real estate on the internet that I am writing this blog post.

I have shared 10 FREE online portfolio website platforms to choose from for freelancers. I have considered the above objections and my experience with no-code tools to create this list.

If you build your portfolio, especially in freelance writing, do join our Publishing Talent Marketplace at Merrative.com to work on exciting writing projects.

(Note: I have placed affiliate links to some portfolio builders which would help me earn a commission. If you have found this guide useful and used my referrals, thank you for your support!)

Why should I create an online portfolio website?

I was searching for a good whitepaper freelance writer, and I had to scout through 20+ Google search result pages filled with agencies and marketplace websites. I hardly found 5 independent writer portfolios ranked beyond the 5th result page – shabby websites but did the trick to showcase that they were the subject matter experts.

Also, none of these 5 websites was by any portfolio hosting platforms.

The experience I had with searching for a whitepaper writer is a case of why you should own your brand on the internet using an interactive portfolio website –

  • You get ranked on Google and found by relevant clients
  • There is less competition as only serious freelancers have portfolio websites today
  • It is easier than ever to get your online portfolio up and running today

All it takes is a bit of hustle to get your portfolio website done – for free.

What should you look for in a platform to host your portfolio?

Here’s a checklist that will help you compare various portfolio website builder options out there:

  1. Availability of templates
  2. Availability of an engaged community for support using the tool
  3. Ease of updating projects
  4. SEO optimization features
  5. Features to embed newsletter email capture forms
  6. Testimonials section
  7. Optional – collect payments via subscription or single purchases
  8. Optional – custom domain
  9. Optional – Features to add forms and book meetings
  10. Optional – features to add blog posts

I have mentioned a few features optional because you can easily integrate third-party apps like Stripe/PayPal for payments, embed Google Forms or use other platforms for blogs.

What should a freelance writing portfolio include?

By taking an example of a freelance writer portfolio, here are some ideas for portfolio sections to include:

  1. Cover Photo with Headshot
  2. Headline: Stating what you do in 1 line.
  3. Primary niche: mention your area of subject matter expertise where you are a thought leader with samples and brands worked for
  4. Secondary niche: write about topics you can write about by doing extensive research with samples and brands worked for
  5. Content formats: list content formats with samples and your approach to writing them
  6. Services offered: a list with 1 line description of services offered by you
  7. Logos of brands you have worked with
  8. Testimonials
  9. Screenshots, case study links or proofs of exceptional results produced for clients
  10. Contact card – email, LinkedIn, Twitter

Remember that your portfolio is NOT your resume.

You need not add everything you have done in life – but only add what is relevant to your writing niche and supports your niche expertise.

You can use the above pointers by replacing the ‘writing’ parts with any other professional area of expertise.

10 free online portfolio website builders WITH custom domain

Here are 10 platforms that allow you to create your freelance portfolios with no additional costs. All of them have free custom domain options:

1. Google Sites

Investment required: None – it’s free, even with a custom domain! You will have to purchase the domain separately.

Google Sites is probably the easiest website builder out there. It’s limited in terms of templates, but it’s great to make a portfolio website. You can also add a custom domain for free. You can purchase a custom domain using Google Domains. With simple drag-and-drop and minimalistic features, Google Sites is definitely a comfortable option for noobs.

Examples of portfolio sites made using Google Sites:

Free portfolio templates for Google Sites

When you enter the Google Sites website, sign in using your Google account and click on ‘Template Gallery’ on top to access free templates by Google.

  1. Fill up the template site with your information. You can easily integrate any Google Doc, Google Slides or Videos as well. On the right side panel, you have options to add text, images, page templates, etc.

Pros of using Google Sites for building your portfolio website:

  • Easy to use: few features mean few decisions to make. Simply drag and drop blocks to publish the portfolio website
  • Google ecosystem: you can easily integrate with other Google products like Docs, Slides, Drive, etc making it easy to showcase files.

Cons of using Google Sites for building your portfolio website:

  • Lacks customizations: there are very few options and templates to customize your portfolio site
  • No blog: there is no separate provision to add blog posts for search engines. Although you can use Google’s Blogger for the same and link it to your portfolio site.

2. Softr + Airtable for portfolio websites

Investment required: Softr provides you with a free plan that includes a custom domain. These are good enough to build a simple portfolio site.

Softr enables you to build websites using simple tools like Airtable or Google Sheets. It is easy to get started with its drag-and-drop interface, blocks, and templates. The best part is you get a free custom domain (but have to purchase the domain separately) or you can host it on Softr’s subdomain. You can even expand your portfolio site by adding new pages and blog posts.
